The Economics of Ecosystems and Biodiversity (TEEB) - An initiative that could help us all in Land Management

Placing a real financial value on natural things and ecosystems has been discussed a lot in the past. Many schemes have failed and yet it is in harsh reality the only route that can be taken to ensure all governments, banking systems and large corporate business sit up and take real notice of the protection of our natural world.

Rather than attempt to describe the motives and action check out the TEEB website.

The importance to us in the industry of this succeeding is a realisation of something that has been discussed regularly on the LJN and is surely always in our heads. The fact that professional land management practitioners, landscapers, gardeners and all associated all suffer from appalling wages.

If the work we do adds to our local, national or international economy, our worth is increased also as practitioners who are the specialists in the production of and ongoing maintenance of areas which attract and maintain ecosystems.
