Following a tailored nutritional programme from Sherriff Amenity, two bowling clubs in Chesterfield can now boast of healthy greens of the highest quality.

Sherriff Amenity not only provide the most comprehensive range of goods and services to the UK amenity and landscape markets, but the company’s leading experts also devise tailored nutritional programmes according to specific requirements. Chesterfield based Staveley Hall and King George V bowling clubs are just the latest two sports facilities to have benefitted from such a programme.

Rob Marsden, greenkeeper at the environmental services department for Chesterfield Borough Council, bases his annual management of the greens around the programme that Sherriff Amenity’s John Mullins has put in place and believes they have reaped the rewards from doing so.

“Since I’ve started following the Sherriff Amenity nutritional programme, everyone has commented on how much the greens have improved over the last two years; not just the playing conditions but health wise too. I’ve got a much deeper and healthier root system which is paying benefit. I can now also reduce the irrigation throughout the summer and speed the surface up without stressing the grass out too much,” he said.

Rob has noticed a particular improvement in sward coverage on the two greens, which is the result of over-seeding with TT1 grass seed and top dressing from Sherriff Amenity. TT1, which was created to meet the specific needs of golf and bowling greens, provides a fine, dense sward of good colour that is tolerant of close mowing. It has excellent year round performance, fineness and disease resistance.

With winter now upon us, Rob has started to incorporate the use of Sherriff Amenity’s GoGreen Plus and MP7 Fungicide Package to provide much needed protection against chillier climates. The GoGreen Plus formula regulates the release of iron over a longer period to give a sustained effect whilst the Potassium element of GoGreen Plus strengthens cell walls in the leaf and stem of the grass plants, improving resistance to cold temperature.

Protection against disease is further enhanced at the two bowling clubs by the inclusion of MP7 in Rob’s programme. Rigorous trials at the Sports Turf Research Institute (STRI) showed that by applying a mixture of Astute, Chipco Green, GoGreen Plus together with the adjuvant Velocity disease control of Microdochium patch (Fusarium patch) was noticeably improved. MP7 combines these products.

Rob first came across Sherriff Amenity in his previous position as a greenkeeper at a golf course where he worked with a few of the company’s products. But as time has gone on Sherriff Amenity is now the only supplier he turns to.

“I used to shop around and do a lot of business with other companies but the products we use now are all from Sherriff Amenity, because they have absolutely everything. I use their pesticides, worm control, insecticides, fungicides, top dressings and fertilisers - literally everything.

“The main reason I use them is because they supply good products and they do exactly what they say on the tin. The company is reliable, they never seem to fail on delivery and their products are all at a competitive price; they are good all round,” said Rob.

With over seven years’ experience in greenkeeping, Rob is a seasoned professional and although he may not need much advice, he has noticed how efficient Sherriff Amenity are in providing great customer service and valuable information.

“John Mullins, the Sherriff Amenity representative in my area, has given me some great technical advice on the products; especially the new ranges. I also know that he’s been out to other greenkeepers from the Chesterfield borough council that have had issues and problems with their greens and has offered them some technical advice and support which they have really benefitted from.

“I’d recommend Sherriff Amenity without a doubt. I don’t tend to have a lot of contact with other clubs but I have recently been to others to provide advice and I have advised them to use Sherriff Amenity products for the very reason that they do what they say they do. They’re good products, the support and technical support are great, as is the delivery and the prices – there’s no reason not to advise people to use them.

“Both the bowling clubs I look after are absolutely delighted with the green improvements over the last 2 years since I started using Sherriff Amenity’s products – that speaks for itself.”

"Interesting but not surprised . Makes we wonder about mowing a grass verge outside a customers property and cutting the pedestrian side of a hedge which is a public right of way . "

"Yes that photo shows you would struggle to find anything less suitable to cut that particular hedge from. I have a large tripod and it only gets used several times per year, perfect for certain jobs but for day to day use more of a hindrance"
