The RHS has created a new role within its scientific wing: Principal Scientist - Plant Health.
This new post, awarded to New Zealander Gerrard Clover, has been created to bring together the society’s expertise on plant health issues to more effectively address gardeners’ concerns about the threat posed by pests and diseases.
The RHS also hopes to co-ordinate its work with that of other organisations operating in this area.
Gerrard Clover has 20 years of experience in international scientific research, including heading a team of 45 plant pathologists and providing scientific services to the New Zealand and UK governments.
He said: "I’m tremendously excited about the challenge of working for the world’s foremost gardening charity. I believe my experience, coupled with the skills of the hugely-talented team at the RHS, will mean that we will be able to help even more gardeners identify and control garden pests."
