Having just completed a sizeable project for a firm like ours, using reclaimed timber sleepers, we were wondering just what other 're-usable' materials can be incorporated into landscape schemes as more than just 'features'? Any ideas anyone?Incidentally, we used the reclaimed oak railway sleepers to form a low retaining wall structure, framing a new patio area. The dark colour and texture of the sleepers sat very wall with the amber patio slabs.

  • In Cornwall we are very lucky to have a ready supply on most larger projects of building stone and gravel as such very easy to complete jobs using only reclaimed materials. That is largely a factor based on the geology of the area. Indeed most recycled materials we use tend to be for backfill and not for the features themselves.

Using some materials whilst the effect can be brilliant adds new dimensions in terms of the original manufacturing process, telegraph poles in particular can release some real nasties into the soil contaminating for long periods afterwards. My favourite jobs are being able to supply timber for new projects cut and planked from trees on the same estate.

But in the past we have used shredded tyres, glass bottle bottoms, amongst others to complete jobs but such finishes are very subjective and tend to come as a decision straight from the client.
