The 2013 Conservation Foundation's Gardening Against The Odds competition has been launched.
The competition is run in memory of Elspeth Thompson, the much loved Sunday Telegraph gardening columnist who died in spring 2010 following a bout of severe depression.
Judges will be looking for stores of triumph over adversity beyond the everyday problems nature sends our way.
Obstacles and constraints within the landscape are a starting point for recognition, but most important are the challenges for the gardeners themselves, be it their physical or mental health and lack of easy resources.
The awards are open to individual gardeners or community groups all over the UK who garden against the odds to create a beautiful private or public garden or communal green space that touches the lives of others. Nominations can be made on behalf of gardeners.
