Today I was handed a sprig of mimosa in advance of International Women's week beginning March 8th (apparently this is a tradition but I've not heard of it). Co-inciding with the warmest day of the year so far here in Southampton - it's 15 deg out in the sun - it reminds me that spring is (almost) here. Certainly it feels like the first true day of spring whatever the calendar says. Shrubs like these that flower at this time of year are valuable and delicate - the mimosa generally needs a warm, south-west wall to do well.
Already buds are forming in the early-to-leaf shrubs like spiraeas and my hellebores are in full flower in the front garden. It's enough to cheer the soul. With the warmer weather comes the weeds and already I've been hoeing out the early seedlings. Soon it will be time to add the mulch to feed the soil and keep further weeds at bay.
Much to do, so little time, roll on spring..
