If you are reading this Blog Post and are not a member of the Landscape Juice Network then you have no doubt arrived here by "Googling" for something like "Garden Design In Hull", "Landscape Designer In East Yorkshire", "Contemporary Exterior Designer In Yorkshire" or even "SketchUp 3D Garden Design Visualisation". If this is the case then you have no doubt "found your man" in me, David Beasley (proprietor of a design and build company) and I have reached my ideal customer!

Unlike many of my competitors nationally, I have not recently moved into Garden Design because of my many years experience of amateur gardening, recent redundancy from my successful career in "The City" and subsequent study of a correspondence garden design course!

"I have been involved in the Landscape Design And Construction Industry since leaving school aged 16 in 1988. I have been trained by Landscape Architects to produce professional standard Landscape Design Drawings and gained (with Credit) my HND In Landscape And Horticultural Technology from Askham Bryan College in 1993."

I do not have any RHS winning Show Gardens to my name as I have never entered any! Anyway, such gardens are only produced to satisfy current horticultural trends and last 2-3 weeks whilst the gardens I design are timeless and designed to mature.

Rest assured, if you decide to commission (hire) me to design your "Outside Room",you have not hired a designer who is still "wet behind the ears" and does not know their trade and that of the other professionals who may be involved in your building/landscape project e.g. architects, builders, landscapers and electricians etc. I myself have worked in an architects office, have worked with builders on two large self-build / remodelling projects, have many years personal "hands on" landscaping experience and so know how these people work and can communicate effectively with them on your behalf.

Also my past landscape experience has not been confined to the roles of "Designer" or "Landscape Craftsman". My Curriculum Vitae also includes the roles of "Landscape Estimator", "Landscape Supervisor", "Nursery Retail Assistant" and "Horticultural Officer" so I know a lot about contemporary landscape materials, where to get them from, how much they cost as well as construction / horticultural techniques, garden plants / products and Grounds Maintenance considerations.

Hand-drawn, inked-up, landscape plans may look impressive and beautiful to the Client, but they are also pretty inaccurate and take ages to produce (believe me, I have had 12 years experience of producing drawings this way!). These costs are in turn passed on to the Client and can eat into their Budget for their landscape scheme. Having advanced on from this old-fashioned method of design ten years ago, all my designs are produced using the latest, industry standard Computer Aided Draughting (CAD) software programs.

This ensures that my designs are as accurate as can be from the start, the finished graphic output is uniform and I can do a lot of my printing "in-house" or electronically. Basic drawings start off as two dimensional (2D), black and white, annotated line drawings. These can subsequently be coloured-in/tinted electronically for presentation processes or imported in to three-dimensional (3D) CAD packages such as Google SketchUp for the production of Perspective Drawings, Virtual Reality Walk-throughs, Animations and Photo-realistic Renderings.

Due to constant advances in technology and my competence in using these programs, I can produce my designs very quickly compared to more traditional methods and benefit you (the customer) in the way of fast "turnaround" of my work and lower Design Fees than the average designer. In coming months I aim to invest/train myself in other 3D/Illustrative Graphic Products to further enhance the Design Services I can offer.

Why do I need my garden designed by a professional you may ask? Well of course you can have a go at doing it yourself or just employ a "Landscaper" to come up with a scheme for you. I'm afraid if you haven't got the "eye" for design and detail, 9 out of 10 times, you / the landscaper will probably get it wrong and you will end up spending a lot of money on your garden only having to have it done again a few years later at even more expense. The money invested in having your garden designed by a professional like me (generally 10% of your budget) will save you a lot of money in the long-run and make your property more saleable if you should wish to move on.

If you employ a trained, qualified Landscape Design & Construction Specialist like myself at a design and build company, you will receive the following service:

  • I will visit your property / site for FREE (within 10 miles radius of HULL, East Yorkshire, UK - mileage charged beyond this radius) to meet with you for up to 1 hour. I will look at your site, listen to your "needs" and "wants" for your outside space and suggest some garden design ideas and show you my vast Portfolio Of Completed Projects (if requested).
  • Within a couple of days, I will return you a detailed breakdown of my Design Fee with my Standard Terms And Conditions and a Contract Acceptance Form.Standard Terms And Conditions.pdf
  • Upon acceptance of my Estimate, I will arrange a date to visit site again to undertake a detailed Survey of the existing building exterior and surrounding outside space.
  • During my survey I will take many measurements / photographs and record the positions of all existing garden features inc. hard landscaping, plants, out-buildings and services. I may also record existing site levels if the site's topography is particularly hilly. I will then take all this information and produce an accurate Base Plan of the existing garden using 2D CAD software and use this as a basis of my designs.

  • Within a couple of weeks, I will then visit your site again and present my Sketch / Concept Design for your perusal / acceptance. The drawings I present at this stage are usually one step way from being the final Presentation Plans that I submit to you. I do not mess about giving you alternate design options and producing inaccurate sketches etc., my designs are normally 90% right first time and usually exceed the Client's expectations. I will of course make minor alterations to the designs at this time if the Client wishes but this is normally not required / requested.
  • Upon acceptance of these drawings, I will proceed to further enhance these drawings, annotating them with the information needed for a competent Landscape Contractor / Builder / D.I.Y.er to construct the proposed garden on-site as per my designs.
  • At this stage, the Client can also opt to choose a design and build company for their professional Procurement and Project Management Services to aid a quality garden build.

All this mention of Design, but your trading name is a design and build company you may ask? Well, as mentioned previously in this Blog Post, I have worked for several other companies in the past as a Landscape Craftsman, whilst I have also been a keen "Gardener" in my "own time" for the last thirteen years. Since 2004, I have offered a complete Landscape Design And Build Service to customers in Hull and The East Riding as well as general Landscaping work. Unlike most designers I,therefore, have direct "hands on" experience of undertaking / overseeing the following operations in a commercial work environment:

* Site Clearance * Setting Out * Earthworks * Land Drainage * Wall and Retaining-wall Construction * Sub-base Preparation * Paving * Decking * Tarmacing * Gravelling * Fencing * Bespoke Steel Railings, Gates and Garden Structures * Garden Lighting * Water Features * Ground Preparation * Grass Seeding * Turfing * Planting *

However, over the last couple of years I have had an influx of Design Only Projects and, even though I do love to "get my hands dirty", I have decided to withdraw my "Build" services and concentrate mainly on Commercial / Residential Landscape Design. I will, however, still consider and love to do "hands on" Soft Landscaping (i.e. turfing, planting and mulching) for my Clients as the vital finishing touch to my Design Service once the Hard-landscapers or Builders have done their stuff and moved off site.

Geographically, I have previously confined my work to Hull and The East Riding Of Yorkshire and primarily to Private Domestic Clients. Now as a design and build company, I am capable to receive and invite Commissions from anywhere in the UK (and visit site if feasible) or globally via. remote working over the internet. Also, I previously "shied away" from Business-To-Business / Commercial Work, I now actively seek this too and offer a complete suite of services that may be of use to Architects, Planning Agents, Garden Designers, Landscapers and Garden Product Retailers. Please keep visiting my website for further updates!

Finally, please do not wait until Spring/Summer to Contact Me about any Landscape Design project (big or small) that you may have. During those times of the year I and my fellow Designers, Landscapers and Builders will be very busy and this may delay your Project being realised. Autumn and Winter is the ideal time to assess the design needs of your Outside Space as the leaves have fallen off the trees / shrubs and it easier to see a site in it's entirety. Also, most construction specialists are "freed up" at this time of year and may be able to quickly fit your project in to their schedules.

As long as temperatures don't dip below 4 degrees centigrade and the rain keeps off, an awful lot of Landscape / Building work can still be done in Autumn and Winter. You also gain from the fact that plants can be bought cheaper and establish better during these months as does turf. Getting your Landscape Project designed and implemented on site over the Winter months ensures that you have a beautiful Outside Space to enjoy the following Spring and Summer.

For further information on all the Commercial / Residential Landscape Design An Visualisation Services I can offer you, please visit my website www.a-design-and-build.co.uk or view My Profile Page on the Landscape Juice Network.

Thank you for having the patience to read the whole of this Blog Post and I look forward to hearing from you in the near future with news of an exiting project that I can get involved with!

Kind Regards
