What is believed to be one of Europe's rarest orchids has been rediscovered by scientists on an island in the Azores.
Known as Hochstetter's butterfly-orchid, and first found in 1838, the scientists spotted it again on a volcanic ridge.
The team of scientists analysed the islands' orchid populations and found the archipelago had three species of butterfly-orchid.
The findings are published in the open-access journal PeerJ - Systematic revision of Platanthera in the Azorean archipelago: not one but three species, including arguably Europe’s rarest orchid.
