The first ever medals have been awarded to the urban gardeners exhibiting their show gardens at Manchester’s Dig the City which takes over the city centre streets from 2-10th of August.
Judged by famed gardener Rachel de Thame and the National Trust’s city gardener, Sean Harkin, 18 gardens are greening up Manchester city centre.
Specially designed and created for Dig the City, the gardens have had to embrace and solve the challenges of gardening in a small urban space.
Successful entries have come from both professional and amateur gardeners, community gardening groups and businesses.
Judge Rachel de Thame said: “We’ve been overwhelmed by the calibre and creativity of the show gardens. Urban gardens present unique challenges to gardeners and it’s very exciting to see these garden designs brought to life.”
The Garden voted ‘Best in Show’ was Hulme Community Garden Centre, creating an edible garden tunnel.
The judges thought the garden fulfilled the urban gardening brief beautifully, incorporating elements of grow your own in a beautiful garden arch.
Ordsall Hall narrowly missed taking the top prize but was awarded a Gold for their garden that told the Tudor tale of gardening via heritage vegetables.
