Crafty cockroaches have changed their sense of taste to dodge poison traps set for them.
The BBC reports how scientists in the US discovered that cockroaches had evolved to detect that the glucose used to coat poison bait was bitter not sweet.
It was something that had been noticed over the past 20 years by workers in the pest industry, noting that cockroaches were avoiding the bait set for them.
Using peanut butter and glucose-rich jam, the scientists were able to detect how the cockroaches turned their back on the sugary jam, instead swarming over the peanut butter.
