Have you renewed your photo driver's licence?

This is a community service message - I've have recently become aware that the new style photo driver's licences require renewing (for a fee) every ten years. If you have one of these, and it is more than ten years old, you may be driving without a valid license and could incur a fine / invalidate your insurance. Please check out your licence - and don't get caught out... besides, the government needs your money!!!! Here is the link to DVLA's website for information: DVLA renewal page . Can I ask that you let as many people as possible know about this. Thanks!

  • Crikey! I've still got an old style paper one! Am I legal?
  • No, not many people know this!

Test drove a car last week and gave him my extremely old paper driving licence, which has to be said, is in ribbons. No problem! Gave it to a hire car company in Spain during the summer, again, no problem!
It has also been accepted as ID on various occasions too.

Saying that, think I will update it. As sure as eggs is eggs, the one time I NEED my driving licence, it will be refused and my mobile will be out of battery!
  • Where did you hear about this. I'm a police officer in London and haven't been told that. Someone only showed me their paper license today and i thought that was alright.
  • just been on the direct.gov website, the dvla should/will send out a renewal form 2 months before the photo expires as it is only valid for 10 years.
as far as i know ,the paper license is valid right up until it is illegible ,no mention of a fine though, ill check again.
  • As far as I can remember, the old paper licenses are still valid if that's what you were issued with. I only learned to drive about five years ago so I was issued with a card photo license anyway and I think it's that one which needs renewing every ten years, not the paper licenses. The DVLA don't seem to make it all that clear though...
  • Just to confirm, this was in the Grauniad (Guardian for those who don't read PE). As I understand, it is only the photo licenses. I could have emphasised this in my post, so sorry for causing anyone unnecessary nerves. But, please, please, please pass the news on and make sure people know.

"Agree with you Graham, we have a client with a long run of Laurel which we only cut once a year mid june and have done for over 20 years, the client is fussy with a capital F ! It's a superb evergreen hedge which is bomb proof.
As to this so called…"

"Disagree there!  I maintain a site with a couple of of large laurel hedges and one cut in July suffices and keeps it looking nice.  Agree.... looks nasty immediately after cutting but quickly perks up so you don't notice the cut leaves.  Pretty much…"

"That's pretty much my thinking, but I am seeing them more and more. Mostly at expensive new builds. Mostly people with very limited gardening experience wanting an immediate finished product. "

"Yes 5' actual instant shaped hedging is very expensive, but if that's what he wants he'll have to pay for it.  A good compromise is use individual plants- you could use 1.5m, but 1.8 or 2m plants would probably be bushier, and by trimming to height…"
