BBUK has been chosen as landscape architect for the £13million refurbishment of Preston Bus Station.
The practice's proposal for a multi-purpose new piazza accompanies New York architect John Puttick Associates' design for a home for Preston Youth Zone on the site, voted for by the public as part of an international competition.
The square gives Preston a much-needed new community space for outdoor events such as cinema screenings and farmers' markets. In addition, a skate park, refreshment kiosks and a shallow, meandering water channel for children to play in will help establish it as a local leisure hub.
Trees will frame views of the Grade II-listed building, while planting along the northern and southern ends of the square will include a seasonally varied mix of native shrubs, perennials and bulbs. These will be white flowered – a reference to the cotton mills of the Industrial Revolution that made the area's fortune.
