A new book by Timber press will be launched at RHS Chelsea this year. I have to register an interst here as I am one of the authors. The book is about small scale green roofs for sheds, outhouses and extensions and includes case studies from all around the world.I am looking forward to joining my colleague John Little of the Grass Roof Company ,Ed Snodgrassand Nigel Dunnett to launch the book - for more info check out Low-tech solutions - Small green roofs.

  • One query about green roofs: it looks like current thinking is that irrigation should be applied for at least the first season after planting (at least that's the message I'm getting from a local supplier) - and this seems to run contrary to the whole sustainability message. Any comments?
  • Rose - this all depends - if planted/seeded between September and April the normal winter rain should suffice. However March to September generally should irrigate over night once a week for at least two months to get the plants established. However this year!!!! Well it is exceptional.

By the way depends on what type of green roof. This is for extensive. Also depends on the scale. If you are doing a small scale green roof where the owner is more in 'charge' they can assess on a weekly basis.

John Little and my e-guide might be of help if you are involved in small scale.
