On a peaceful Saturday morning....

Fereday got a new toy delivered on Saturday morning.... a BlackBerry Bold. This is his second BlackBerry, so you might think the whole BlackBerry ownership thing would be a bit old hat by now, but you'd be wrong. My sister calls them 'CrackBerries' because they're so addictive. And I think I can follow the argument that there will eventually evolve a race of pointy-thumbed, squinty people which has its genetic source in the current group of BlackBerry owners.Anyway, it was a very quiet Saturday morning as Fereday, doing nothing to disprove the stereotype that men are completely disarmed by the opportunity to play with new technology (particularly when the new toy is roughly the same size and shape as a TV remote control), first spent time admiring the new casing and display (a clockface with white markers on a black background reminiscient of the old BBC clock appears to have replaced the old hourglass... thinking about that, the hourglass representation is a bit odd on modern technology.... here you are with your supa doopa Wi-Fi enabled, 3G, all-singing and strictly come dancing laptop complete with go-faster stripes and the symbol used to indicate that things are on a 'go-slow' is an hourglass, one of the most antique ways of measuring time... this obvious 'misfit' is perhaps why we respond so primitively to its appearance on a screen)... then he moved on to (my favourite) the selection of a new ring tone.... it was like having an overexcited R2-D2 in the room for about 20 minutes.... He's downloaded the Facebook application and marvelled over the speed of download, clarity of display and functionality of the application.... It came with a case, but I can tell he's thinking that his new 'baby' might need some more groovy finery, so fully expect some point of the day will be spent making a selection from the BlackBerry website.... Generally, the new toy has Fereday positively beaming.... and very quiet.I wonder if his clients will notice the difference now that their gardener is Wi-Fi enabled????But oh horror of horrors.... the damn thing speaks... a very cold, clinical female voice has just asked him to 'say a command'... this is not good.... perplexity has clouded his face..... more wrinkles form on the forehead as he wonders what would happen if he said "do the laundry" or "wash the car" and - worse thought - whether this means he needs to capitulate and read the dreaded instruction manual.... Clearly he's going to need to disappear somewhere quiet where he can peruse said tome without risk of being spotted... hope that doesn't mean the roast chicken he's on to make for dinner is going to be late!

  • I'll send Fereday over... you could start a cult! :-)
  • Thanks for the latest batch Cat and glad all well. No point in blackberry down here, no signal anyway but clients will just ring for men in white coats if I try to tell them about being able to keep in touch with world by way of blackberry. I always end up putting new phone into a pocket filled with rain, which has become so frequent that the warranties are null and void from the local mobile shop (1 hour from here). Keep them coming.
  • Spent Saturday taking my two teenage daughters shopping in London. After 2 hours I left them to it and found Selfridges food hall. Just when life couldn't get any better I came across a mobile phone shop and blagged the assistant to give me a Blackberry Bold handset.

At first I was a little disappointed as I found the internet pitch / font too small but now that I have found out how to zoom in and out I just love the little device. Wouldn't be without it!

"Agree with you Graham, we have a client with a long run of Laurel which we only cut once a year mid june and have done for over 20 years, the client is fussy with a capital F ! It's a superb evergreen hedge which is bomb proof.
As to this so called…"

"Disagree there!  I maintain a site with a couple of of large laurel hedges and one cut in July suffices and keeps it looking nice.  Agree.... looks nasty immediately after cutting but quickly perks up so you don't notice the cut leaves.  Pretty much…"

"That's pretty much my thinking, but I am seeing them more and more. Mostly at expensive new builds. Mostly people with very limited gardening experience wanting an immediate finished product. "

"Yes 5' actual instant shaped hedging is very expensive, but if that's what he wants he'll have to pay for it.  A good compromise is use individual plants- you could use 1.5m, but 1.8 or 2m plants would probably be bushier, and by trimming to height…"
