Lawns – Is it too late to sow seed?

Autumn is here and some may be preparing for hibernation over the winter, however, there is still plenty that can be done outside in the garden. As well as the usual tidying, pruning and maintenance jobs, it is still possible to successfully sow and establish a lawn. Autumn can be the ideal time to sow grass seed; the ground is still warm without the hot daytime temperatures and there is more moisture, which produces the perfect conditions for seed germination. In addition, gardens are being used less, so traffic over the seeded areas will be lower and the young grass has longer to establish before peak use times in the summer.

When temperatures dip it can cause germination issues for some grass seed varieties, however, the ProGreen range has mixes specifically selected for their ability to germinate and grow in a variety of conditions. Our leading winter grass seed successfully germinates and establishes in temperatures down to 5°C while also producing a good quality, heard wearing lawn. Where establishing grass quickly is important, applications of our Amvista G1 new grass fertiliser can make a big difference. The high phosphate but well-balanced fertiliser helps to promote quicker root development and establishment, important when the days are getting cooler and shorter rather than longer and warmer.

It is important that established lawns are not forgotten at this time of year too. Applications of the correct fertiliser can help to toughen grass, and encourage deeper rooting. Our Autumn/Winter products are also formulated to avoid flushes of delicate growth, which is more susceptible to frost damage and disease infection. At ProGreen we have a long life fertiliser Amvista G8 (10-0-30) which will provide slow released nutrients throughout the winter to sustain healthy lawns.  For a quicker response, we also have Amvista G9 Autumn and Winter which will give lawns and grassland a boost going into winter.

When sowing seed at any time of year it is important to remember the key to success is often in the preparation, following a few simple steps can make all the difference. First, it is important to eliminate perennial weeds, use a contact herbicide rather than a residual to avoid disrupting seed germination. Second cultivate to a fine tilth, this allows for easy penetration by the grass roots and aids seed/soil contact. This is also a good time to incorporate organic matter and fertilisers and should be used to level the lawn area if required. Thirdly ensure you have selected the correct grass seed species and seed rate to satisfy the requirements of the lawn. This is a decision our qualified and experienced technical advisors will be able to assist you with. Finally spread the seed evenly over the prepared surface. This is best done by splitting the seed into two equal amounts and spreading them in two passes done different directions, this helps to negate the impact of uneven ground. Once finished gently rake, or ideally roll, the seed in to ensure good contact between seed and soil. If applying in dry conditions, or if no rain is forecast following seeding, lightly water the seeded area to speed up the germination process.
