Image resizing tools to help your photographs

I do think that the internet's visual appeal and the fact that landscape gardening and designer is also a visual environment means effective use of images can really help. Potential clients can quickly get a handle on your work, imagine some of the things you've done for others in their own gardens and you begin to generate that 'warm' feeling that any salesperson would love to have. Good photographs on your site, as well as the network, can make a real difference, but often you need to reduce their size to ensure they load quickly, or maybe you want to crop a pic to focus on a key element. Here are a handful of online image editors that are free to use and can quickly do the job: Web Resizer Without having to install any software, all you do is upload your photograph from your computer, resize or crop your image and save it to insert into your website. Resize2Mail Very similar to the above, a quick and simple service that lets you resize photographs to a number of default sizes. Picnik This is a step on from the image resizing services as it provides a number of different editing options, lets you add text and lets you give your photographs different effects. Phil uses this and it is worth spending a little more time exploring what it offers. If you use any photo editing services please feel free to leave a comment below.

I would just add that I have premium Picnik - a little extra tools but I did use the free version for a long time to good effect. It is priced at $24 which is £16 at today's exchange.
  • Phil introduced me to Picnik - I like how it links to flickr, very Web 2.00 - and very versatile

My broadband is on the slow side though and if I have a lot of images to process I find I need an application that is run on my own PC rather than online. I have mentioned Picasa before but I know some folks don't get on with the interface so for them take a look at Faststone - free for our kind of use and very powerful - it even handles RAW files quickly and efficiently.

"Agree with you Graham, we have a client with a long run of Laurel which we only cut once a year mid june and have done for over 20 years, the client is fussy with a capital F ! It's a superb evergreen hedge which is bomb proof.
As to this so called…"

"Disagree there!  I maintain a site with a couple of of large laurel hedges and one cut in July suffices and keeps it looking nice.  Agree.... looks nasty immediately after cutting but quickly perks up so you don't notice the cut leaves.  Pretty much…"

"That's pretty much my thinking, but I am seeing them more and more. Mostly at expensive new builds. Mostly people with very limited gardening experience wanting an immediate finished product. "

"Yes 5' actual instant shaped hedging is very expensive, but if that's what he wants he'll have to pay for it.  A good compromise is use individual plants- you could use 1.5m, but 1.8 or 2m plants would probably be bushier, and by trimming to height…"
