Defra has published detailed guidance on landscape and seascape character assessments, designed to help in a variety of projects.
Defra says:
Landscape character assessment (LCA) is the process of identifying and describing variation in character of the landscape. LCA documents identify and explain the unique combination of elements and features that make landscapes distinctive by mapping and describing character types and areas. They also show how the landscape is perceived, experienced and valued by people.
The assessment process may prove helpful to planning departments and local councils, as well as consultants, developers and land owners.
LCAs can be used in a variety of situations such as land management plans, landscape and visual impact assessments and green infrastructure.
