The objective was to create a garden with space to entertain and enjoy. Existing beds needed retaining and a shed was required. Privacy to the south was important, as was a degree of order and ease of maintenance.
The solution is based around a strong control axis layout, focussing in a circular lawn with water feature, between a generous new patio and secret garden beyond an informed hedge. Here are the practical needs of greenhouse, shed and compost bin.
New oak sleepers create affordable long-lived retaining walls, whilst trellis panels help divide the garden into intimate areas. Borders are clearer, planted with a bold mix of evergreens for year round structure. Deciduous shrubs and perennials add seasonal variation & interest. The water feature adds sound and movement to the heart of the garden. A new seat at the top of the axis brings a fresh perspective on hot days.
Planting scheme
The client had a particular love of variegated plants and Photiuia. This will influence the planting scheme.
Two ornimental small trees with add great seasonal interest. Malus ‘Lemoinei’ with striking leaf colour in Spring & Autumn as well as blossom, and Cornus Alternifolio Agented, a stunning variegated tree.
Plans around the patio will be soft & scented and flowers that attract bees & bird life will be favoured.
