From the Landscape Juice Newsletter

From the Landscape Juice Network newsletter:"Matthew Wilson tells me he will wait until the end of the current series before entering into a debate - I'll try to make sure he doesn't forget but since the last show brought further critical comments from professional garden designers and garden design teachers, I suspect there will be a defensive public relations' offensive."An interesting concept - defensive public relations' offensive. Is this better than an 'offensive public relations defensive' - ah, the vagaries of the English language!I watched the programme about the Suffolk man - missed the beginning so where did he get his money? - and thought the Chelsea design was a mess, certainly didn't suit the property and the man was a fool who would be soon parted with his money if he wasn't careful. However, I applauded his approach to the total concept of what he was trying to achieve with his numerous acres and would like to be around in fifty years time to see its maturity. Many of the gardens and estates that we love today surely started out just like this. I was down at Chilham Castle a week or two ago and saw what the then immensely wealthy mine owner Sir Edmund Davis created in the late 1930's and admired his foresight even though he would never enjoy its splendour to the full.By the way, the Barbara Everard memoirs (and she was Lady Davis' companion then) are nearly ready for publication - only half a dozen more chapters to transcribe and illustrations to scan in. If anyone wants a preview in exchange for some comments, please let me know.Martin Everard

Just for the record and to avoid any confusion - Martin is quoting a paragraph from the Landscape Juice Network newsletter and not the Landscape Man newsletter mentioned at the head of this blog post - the internal newsletter was sent out by me, Philip Voice, as part of our weekly service and refers to email conversations I've had with the Landscape Man presenter, Matthew Wilson.

"Plus it doesn't matter if we all know plants are better value. I'd make the point of this to the customer but if they want trough grown at the extra cost that's their choice I'd just do it"

"I've done 5ft Thorne troughs. Very easy to plant just got a mini digger dug the trench then drop them in couldn't be easier however £250 per m does seem expensive. "

"Agree with you Graham, we have a client with a long run of Laurel which we only cut once a year mid june and have done for over 20 years, the client is fussy with a capital F ! It's a superb evergreen hedge which is bomb proof.
As to this so called…"

"Disagree there!  I maintain a site with a couple of of large laurel hedges and one cut in July suffices and keeps it looking nice.  Agree.... looks nasty immediately after cutting but quickly perks up so you don't notice the cut leaves.  Pretty much…"
