Now that the weather has returned to something a bit more like a normal English summer I have been able to do some splitting and dividing of some plants which have overgrown like the hair grass Stipa tenuissima. This has done amazingly well this year - I think it liked the hot conditions.. I now find that it has flopped over so not longer erect at all but more like a blob. The solution has been to divide it which rejuventates and allows it to stand more upright. I find this works for all manner of herbaceous perennials - but for some, like sedum, now is the wrong time of year. I will attempt that one in the autumn once cut down or the spring if i forget (and sometimes I like to leave the flowers on over the winter for interest).
