A project that transformed neglected land into a popular community garden has earned national recognition.
Mill Street Garden in Farington has been named national runner-up in the community-led design category of the 2013 Street Design Awards, a competition recognising best schemes across the UK.
A 12-foot replica shuttle and seats shaped as coloured cotton reels form the focal point of the garden at the junction of Mill Street and Stanifield Lane, which commemorates the 150th anniversary of the end of the Lancashire Cotton Famine.
County Councillor Mike Otter said: “The parish council pushed forward this terrific community project and I’m thrilled it’s received national recognition through the Street Design Awards.
“It’s not only a local landmark that can be enjoyed by future generations, but also a poignant reminder of the fascinating history of this parish.”
