Chris Beardshaw finalists on show at Malvern

[press release] Landscape gardeners visiting the Malvern Spring Gardening Show (6th-9th May) will have the opportunity to view innovative designs created by the seven finalists in this year’s Chris Beardshaw Mentoring Scholarship (CBMS), sponsored by Bradstone. The CBMS is open to amateur, trainee and semi-professional landscapers and the finalists, who come from a variety of professional backgrounds, all share the same passion for landscape garden design. Their gardens, inspired by the theme of ‘Circus’, will feature materials from Bradstone’s paving, decorative aggregates, walling, edging, block paving and accessories ranges. The gardens demonstrate the range and versatility of Bradstone’s products, as well as a range of innovative planting techniques. Bradstone’s log stepping stones in ‘Inside Out’ enable visitors to enjoy the delights of the circus from within, while stone circles made from Antique Natural Sandstone and Polished Natural Sandstone Paving in ‘Bravura’ emulate the historic tradition of having three show circles within the big top. All of the finalists’ gardens will be assessed by a panel comprising Chris Beardshaw, Biddy Bolsover from Bradstone, an Aggregate Industries business, and a representative from Malvern’s partner the Royal Horticultural Society. Chris Beardshaw said: “The Chris Beardshaw Mentoring Scholarship is a unique vocational scheme, which aims to raise the profile of the landscape design industry and highlight just what it takes to become a professional landscape gardener. Now in its third year, the scheme offers the winning scholar the chance to work alongside me, receive invaluable business advice and technical support from Bradstone and gain work experience with nurseries and design contractors. “All the potential scholars at Malvern this year will have benefitted from the experience so far, but for the chosen winner it will mark the start of a great year, providing an excellent springboard for their future design career.” Group chief executive of Aggregate Industries Bill Bolsover said: “We are always keen to support new talent in the landscape gardening industry and champion cutting edge design, which is why the Chris Beardshaw Mentoring Scholarship is an important partnership for Bradstone. “The Malvern Spring Gardening Show provides an opportunity for us to showcase a range of innovative and sustainable products, which can help landscapers transform a garden quickly and easily, as well as meeting the growing demand from customers for responsibly sourced products.” The Chris Beardshaw finalists can be found in the Show Gardens Arena at the Malvern Spring Gardening Show. "Plus it doesn't matter if we all know plants are better value. I'd make the point of this to the customer but if they want trough grown at the extra cost that's their choice I'd just do it"

"I've done 5ft Thorne troughs. Very easy to plant just got a mini digger dug the trench then drop them in couldn't be easier however £250 per m does seem expensive. "

"Disagree there!  I maintain a site with a couple of of large laurel hedges and one cut in July suffices and keeps it looking nice.  Agree.... looks nasty immediately after cutting but quickly perks up so you don't notice the cut leaves.  Pretty much…"

"That's pretty much my thinking, but I am seeing them more and more. Mostly at expensive new builds. Mostly people with very limited gardening experience wanting an immediate finished product. "
