Brogues and antler hats for dogs....

It's been a good weekend. The weather has turned sufficiently cold to warrant camouflage clothing - gloves, scarves, jumpers, and shoes which don't require a wanton display of toe clevage or luridly painted toenails - perfect bliss....from here on in, it's roast chickens, hot soup, and happy days.Still, the impending move to the South plays on my mind. Fereday, bless him, is bearing up, but I know it's tough. He's leaving behind a successful little business for the great unknown. Being practical, he's been applying for jobs already - very interesting stuff, even some roles which I'd love to try out for myself if I wasn't so institutionalised in my current role. But I've a real sense of melancholy as Fereday looks to his future, transplanting himself from the great outdoors to the computer chip-eroded interior landscapes of heavy duty carpeting, modular furniture and the cloned clicky-heeled management brigades. He looks wonderful in his 'new' suit, even though I still have to take it in to the seamstress to have the trollies shortened. He's also inordinantly happy with his first ever pair of really smart shoes - high shine brown brogues... I had to ask him if he wanted to wear them home from the shop he was so enamoured of them... in the end, though, he forebore and they travelled home in the box. An antique pair of cufflinks followed today... we just need to get a couple of nice shirts and ties - it's not critical yet, but I think the longer we go without buying them, the closer we get to Fereday turning up to interview in a lovely suit, shoes and a John Deer tee-shirt - not a good look!!! Looks like we're hopping over the fence pretty soon, everyone - from gardener and wife to a pair of customers... also not a good look!!!But that's at least a couple of months off... tomorrow, it's a day trip to London for me.... carrying along three handmade felt Christmas hats and a pair of felt antlers for my London roomie... amazing what you can accomplish in a weekend, eh??

Honey Badger replied to DerbyLad's discussion Fence spike in clay

Palisade fence, single or double.
I've used spike without concrete for panel fencing. Don't think I'd like to use them on close board without concrete because of the extra weight.
I figured out method for the spikes. Used a 6ft digging pushed…"

"Trying to drive fence spikes into the ground so that they stay straight we've found to be nigh on impossible, the smallest obstacle seems to send them in all directions apart from vertical. Are you suggesting spikes as you are using timber posts and…"

Hi all,I'm erecting a close board timber fence in clay soil. Due to the clay and poor drainage I'm thinking of using fence spikes. Would clay be suitable? Would it provide enough stability for a 1.8 mt high fence? I'm considering using 15cm wide…

Most are fascinated and…"

"It's interesting though how many customers see any creature within their garden territory as an intruder .
Fear of the unknown perhaps ?
Must admit though the unfortunate  label of slow worm does them no favours . "

"to be fair, if they were unaware of what Slow Worms are, from the name alone, they might sound like a pest, like some outdoor type of tape worm"
