Yep would agree and creates an evergreen mat that can be 'hedgecut' if needed.

If you wanted a 'softer' alternative, look at Ajuga repans, lowish growing good ground cover, leaves change colours and plant will flower blue in spring/summer

  • That's a big drop - have you thought of putting in some geotextile membrane first, then planting through it?  Some of these will biodegrade so plants can take over holding slope together.

    • Sounds a good idea

Mahonia aquifolium would be suitable for banks and tolerates being cut back.

  • I would be wary of planting Ajuga reptans as in my experience it is apt to die out. I have tried it in various positions, damp and dry, shade and sun and it always disappears. You have not said what aspect the slope has, is it south-facing?

Could that not suggest other problems given a 100% failure?

I would not plant in a 100% sun, south facing dry location, but I've seen it used to great effect planted on retaining bank at a business park hence suggestion.

    • North facing sorry
