Web Design Virgin

I am presently moderately mind-dead having decided to get online and build my own website (had a hosting account for months). I have started this blog, because by publicising my intent means I have to get on with it, and my experiences could be of use to others on the network. If only to warn of the pitfalls or to just give a good laugh.I know this is not an IT site, but we all use the net, and even though it is a major global player at present this is going to massively expand - could even have designers in the UK producing landscape designs for clients in Singapore using google-earth and liasing with local labour to achieve the desired end result, never having left the UK.Anyway after quotes of over £800, I have decided to opt for designing my own site utilising Templates from www.dreamtemplate.com at £39 for a years subscription with access to over 5000 templates. Its had good reviews (PS I am not on any commission -honest), will let you know if its ok - presently found had to create my own links between the various template web pages - not automatically there. Adding to the time spent just organising the template.Using Adobe Dreamweaver to adulterate template to fit my purpose - this is not a intuitive user freindly web page editor - believe me - hence my reference to mind - death earlier. You have to set up a root folder into which all web related files go cf. when download template put all its files in this folder before using web editor - they do not do it for you.Basic site aims are to market myself, generate some income (possibly) be useful to anybody that connects. This aspect I will develope and I will update as time goes by - I do not anticipate this being Quick operation.Feel free to comment, constructive ridicule will be taken on the chin

    Hi John

    Take a look at Typepad - http://www.sixapart.com/uk/typepad/

By using this system you can concentrate on writing your site content and a link hierarchy automatically. I would not want the site to become a distraction from the objective of publicising your business if I were you.

    Hope that helps.

    Kind regards

    Phil
  • Thanks Phil, Will look into typepad as an option because as you say web-site should not become an all encompassing task.

Thought I'd sign up to this forum. And I hope I'm allowed to post stuff for sale on here as this will be a one off? I have for sale a tiny pro robot, it's not the new edition but it's the bigger one of the two. If anyone is interested then please…

"Agree with you Graham, we have a client with a long run of Laurel which we only cut once a year mid june and have done for over 20 years, the client is fussy with a capital F ! It's a superb evergreen hedge which is bomb proof.
As to this so called…"

"Disagree there!  I maintain a site with a couple of of large laurel hedges and one cut in July suffices and keeps it looking nice.  Agree.... looks nasty immediately after cutting but quickly perks up so you don't notice the cut leaves.  Pretty much…"

"That's pretty much my thinking, but I am seeing them more and more. Mostly at expensive new builds. Mostly people with very limited gardening experience wanting an immediate finished product. "

Tim Bucknall replied to Duncan Neville's discussion Instant hedging
"Yes 5' actual instant shaped hedging is very expensive, but if that's what he wants he'll have to pay for it.  A good compromise is use individual plants- you could use 1.5m, but 1.8 or 2m plants would probably be bushier, and by trimming to height…"
