Staff at Wyevale Nurseries are celebrating today (September 9, 2015) after its new plant Salvia ‘Love and Wishes’ won the Best Plant Introduction – Nursery Stock Award at the Four Oaks Trade Show.
Wyevale Nurseries based in Hereford entered seven new plants for the award and were delighted that Salvia ‘Love & Wishes’ was crowned the winner at the trade show yesterday.
Adam Dunnett, Sales and Marketing Director at Wyevale Nurseries, said: “We’re ecstatic that Salvia ‘Love & Wishes’ was named as the winning plant in the Best Plant Introduction – Nursery Stock Award. It is a truly exceptional variety – a tremendous member of the ‘Wish’ Salvia series.
“It has deep purple flowers with deep burgundy calyces, dark green foliage and dark stems, which combine superbly to create a stunning plant. In the garden it has a very long flowering time from June through to November and is a terrific potted specimen.”
The awards were judged by Garden Centre Association Chief Executive, Iain Wylie, Horticultural Week Technical Editor, Sally Drury and Horticultural Week Editor, Kate Lowe.
The award was presented to Wyevale Nurseries at a special after show reception attended by more than 200 exhibitors.
Wyevale Nurseries is one of the largest family-run wholesale nurseries in the UK. It was established in 1930 by Harry Williamson, a horticulturist and entrepreneur. It became the company it is today under the leadership of his son, Peter, who sadly passed away in 2011.
The Williamsons’ saw the opportunity to sell their product to an undeveloped retail market, creating one of the first garden centres, followed by a chain. In 1987, the retail side needed to expand and the 19 garden centres were sold as a PLC.
The family then turned its focus to Wyevale Nurseries Ltd. It continues to be a family-run business with ownership and joint chairmanship currently being held by the third generation, Heather and Simeon Williamson, with plans for the fourth generation to takeover in the future.
Wyevale Nurseries has a significant product range and is regularly introducing new plants. It offers a large variety of trees, shrubs, hedging, herbaceous and specimen plants to garden centres, landscape contractors, local authorities, foresters and landowners.
