The launch of the pilot Peatland Code today represents a once-in-a-generation opportunity to restore a million hectares of some of the UK’s most beautiful and important landscapes – if we don’t let ideological differences get in our way.
The draft Peatland Code is being launched today by Environment Minister, Richard Benyon, at the International Union for the Conservation of Nature’s (IUCN) UK Peatland Programme conference: Investing in Nature 2013 – partnership for a new peatland era.
It sets down rules for peatland restoration projects to ensure they deliver new restoration that really benefits the climate, whilst benefiting wildlife and water resources.
In return for keeping these rules, projects can become accredited under the Code, giving potential investors confidence that their money will deliver real benefits.
