The BALI North West region presentation was held at The Mere golf & country club Mere, Knutsford, Cheshire with 96 people attending including landscape contractors, landscape architects and garden designers who wish to achieve higher levels of professionalism.
The evening commenced with Danny Warner from Vectorworks presenting an overview of the leading landscape design software that has helped in the creation of residential landscaping and commercial projects from concept to construction.
The 3 course meal was served followed by Mark Gregory from Landform Consultants Ltd the award winning garden design and landscape specialists giving an excellent presentation on garden construction and the various pit falls that can occur when constructing a new landscape garden design.
The presentation included

The principles of good construction and the latest techniques in the construction of a new landscaped garden with the specification process and the relationship between the contractor and the landscape architect or garden designer.
Three areas of built work was covered including:
Vertical walls:

from foundation ,specification and design, to different backing walls and their components with different pointing and jointing techniques.
Paving:

from sub base design and considerations to paving types and their characteristics and laying methods, pointing design and what can go wrong and how to prevent it.

SUDS :

SUDS made simple and how to apply , designing drainage solutions, how to specify SUDS and the various options available
The presentation provided valuable construction techniques, there was a questions and answers session throughout along with the chance to engage into some great discussions but as time was running out I certainly did not want to interupt the flow of such a good presentation
All in all it was a very well organised evening by Diane McCulloch from BALI and a great result in getting 96 people to attend, it was a superb meal at a top quality hotel in the Cheshire area in excellent surroundings with a good presentation by APL Chairman and 12 times Chelsea Flower show award winner Mark Gregory who has also won numerous industry awards for projects in London and the South East.

His dynamic approach, energy and experience have given him a reputation for innovation and technical expertise within the landscaping community.

It was well worth giving up a night of your time for the information a garden designer or landscape architect would gain by attending

  • Sounds like a very interesting evening and well worth attending.

I have to say I googled Mark Gregory after reading Gary's comment and to my surprise it returned results for firstly an actor then an artist and thirdly linkedin 25 Mark Gregory results. Image results were a little better and APL Mark Gregory was the fourth result courtesy of the BBC RHS Chelsea coverage.

So perhaps this piece will improve google search results for this particular Mark Gregory in future, although it will not help Gary's feeling of riding on coat-tails.

Gary its only a few weeks ago you deleted most of your forum posts and of course the photo of the patio showing the cross road laying pattern and you have the audacity to post on my blog something negative (yet again).

anyway moving on to something interesting

yes it was a very good night Tanya and for someone like yourself t would be well worth attending to gain if only a little bit of knowlege, Mark did actually explain it was a full day presentation condensened into a couple of hours but I am sure if you stayed behind afterwards he would explain anything what you may of not understood

"I wouldn't cut a hedge without one. Anything over 6' you should get with 3 adjustable legs, otherwise they can be unstable if you lean - but positioned correctly they are the only way.

"Yes had that scenario where you can't reach a fiddly bit no matter what ladder and have to balance on the apex of a shed roof or do best job painstakingly with a long reach pole pruner . "

"I'm very wary of these tripod ladders, I took a life changing fall from the top of a 12ft tripod. Now I only use them myself with great care. The issue is that they are very unstable at the top if you lean to either side, and they go with no…"

"Done a couple of second cuts already this last week would you believe. It's almost as if the grass has a memory of last year's drought and is making up for it now plenty of moisture available"

"the tripods are good but in some scenarios the wide base and the fact the 3rd leg has to be placed some distance away from the step part for stability makes this large foot print impractical eg when cutting hedge behind a shed or greenhouse with…"

"Tripods are better than any other ladder that's a fact. You can cut hedges that are lower than the ladder but it is more awkward, I have a 6ft amd a 12 foot been using both for the last 15yrs and haven't come stuck yet. Believe me once you've had…"
