Phil Mulligan has been acting as interim chief executive since the end of October when Alastair McCapra left. Phil Mulligan is an experienced manager whose most recent role was as executive director of the United Nations Association UK.
He also spent four years as chief executive of Environmental Protection UK (formerly the Clean Air Society) and, in the 1990s, spent six months as crew on Greenpeace’s boat, the Rainbow Warrior.
Speaking about the appointment, Landscape Institute president Sue Illman said: "We are delighted to have selected Phil as our new CEO. His combination of leadership experience and environmental knowledge perfectly matches our needs for moving the Landscape Institute forward.
"In the run up to the 2015 election, Phil’s interests and experience will be a major asset in our work with all of the political parties."
Phil Mulligan said: "These are exciting times to be speaking up for landscape architecture. Just this week the Landscape Institute is celebrating the landscape of the Eden Project and next week it is launching a new publication on public health and landscape.
"Landscape architecture brings together many of my personal and professional interests. My work at the United Nations Association and before that at Environmental Protection UK, focused on sustainability, climate change and community engagement."
Phil Mulligan will bring to the role his experience of membership organisations and strong management skills. "Any organisation is about the people who are in it," he said. "It is about personal performance and getting the best out of the team. That is what I like doing."
Landscape also chimes with Phil Mulligan’s strong environmental commitment. His stint on the Rainbow Warrior was the result of his time working for Greenpeace in Australia. "The more I read about landscape, the more alignment I see with my interests," he said.
