Garden Design Software

Now I am very computer literate, familiar with digital photography and its associated colour management. However when it comes to garden design - I believe listening to the client is the key, I do this, translate this to them verbally, with sketches on the back of anything that comes to hand. I communicate my concepts with my passion for the project, but maybe need to start being more professional (might get me more commissions) and produce eye catching CA Designs. Now there are loads on the market, so thought this might be a good blog to start where views, and experiences on the cad software out there can be exchanged.

  • I know of people who can do good drawings with google sketchup and the best thing is it is free software.

I am still trying to find the time to get to grips with it yet though.

    Hi John

You might be interested in this previous thread.

Garden design software - what does it do and what does it cost?
  • Thanks for your feedback. I have just got in from a couple of hours hand -weeding carrots in the allotment. Not earned a penny - but its good therapy and beats Prozac hands down. To cap it all missus done a good bolognese and my Border Terrier is sat on my lap helping me type.
  • Just downloading sketchup as I type will let you know how get on with it. Probably still use back of an envelope for ideas, software to polish it up.
  • As I work mainly on the implementation of other peoples designs it is very very noticeable that most designs have gone back to drawings and sketches, cheaper, changeable and practical for the man on the ground.
  • Thanks everybody you've all given me alot to get on with.

"Disagree there!  I maintain a site with a couple of of large laurel hedges and one cut in July suffices and keeps it looking nice.  Agree.... looks nasty immediately after cutting but quickly perks up so you don't notice the cut leaves.  Pretty much…"

"That's pretty much my thinking, but I am seeing them more and more. Mostly at expensive new builds. Mostly people with very limited gardening experience wanting an immediate finished product. "

"Yes 5' actual instant shaped hedging is very expensive, but if that's what he wants he'll have to pay for it.  A good compromise is use individual plants- you could use 1.5m, but 1.8 or 2m plants would probably be bushier, and by trimming to height…"
