The Shetland Islands will kill off its weeds with hot water instead of using chemical weedkillers such as glyphosate based products.
The decision has been made to ask grounds staff to use the Cardley Wave Mid Series system on pavement areas across the islands.
William Spence, executive manager – environmental services, of Shetland Islands Council said: “The environmental advantages are that we are not using chemicals in any form thus reducing the risk of contaminating waterways and effects on pets and wildlife.”
With the machine also being used for the removal of algae and moss from paved areas around the main streets, William said: “We also hope this will reduce slips and falls due to algae and moss, making all our paved areas and lane areas safer for the public."
High rainfall levels and strong winds throughout the year made it difficult for council staff to use standard spraying equipment, but it is possible to use the hot water system in most weathers including wind and rain.
