The Pumphouse is a Grade II listed building constructed in the 1880’s and is located at the Innovation Quarter in Barry, South Wales. The structure has recently been redeveloped and is set to become the first purpose-built live/work facility at the centre of Barry’s commercial regeneration. Vale of Glamorgan Council worked with DS Properties to develop the site which is also set to offer office units, high end shops, restaurants and cafes, thanks to investment from the Welsh Government and Vale of Glamorgan Council.
The redevelopment plan was carried out by DT Contractors (South West Ltd) and the landscape at The Pumphouse has been given a stunning update with the installation Tobermore’s tumbled Tegula block paving in the mellow blended tones of Bracken and modern Manhattan plank paving in sparkling Silver.
Tegula undergoes a tumbling manufacturing process at Tobermore’s world class manufacturing plant to produce an aged, antique appearance. Tegula is the ideal paving solution for The Pumphouse as it creates a rustic look, complementing the historic structure perfectly.
Manhattan is a linear plank paving system that has been delicately intertwined with Tegula to create a stylish square border pattern running throughout the landscape design at The Pumphouse. Manhattan is contemporary style product due to the chic granite aggregate surface layer that is similar to the look of natural granite. The integration of Manhattan alongside Tegula creates a fabulous infusion of modern and traditional product styles.
The Pumphouse previously formed part of Barry’s historic dock complex, providing hydraulic power to operate coal drops, lock gates, swing bridges and other equipment around the docks. Up until this point, it has been disused for many years but has always remained a local landmark with its imposing 42 metre high chimney, and is one of the few hydraulic Pumphouse buildings remaining in Wales.
