Ayr Flower Show

I thought i'd better write this blog before it bcomes a distant memory as time has a habit of marching on. We created a courtyard garden in 3 and a half days and as always there is never enough time which in the end we ran out of. Awarded silver gilt and lost points on technicalities - Not enough of the fence panels, which were provided by the organisers, covered. Planting left to last and literally thrown in - not that the judges or the public seemed to notice - but the judges did comment on the plant pots showing and ofcourse there was the occasional label left on. Our title 'sett in stone' was ok but theme 'back to the future' threw them a bit - had to explain that we had gone back i.e recylced glass, reclaimed stone to create a sustainable garden for the future. Maybe just a tad obscure!!The garden was created using caithness stone in the paved area along with reclaimed granite setts and recycled glass. The walling was drystane using Denfind stone - stone from spoilheaps of a disused quarry. Grampian marble and slices of granite setts formed the centre of the courtyard. Planting was a mixture of shrubs, conifers, perennials, ferns and grasses. This was about the only thing that changed quite dramatically from the original plan which was 'prairie style' but the weather was hopeless as far as that was concerned with things coming on too early. Features included water feature, beehive composter and mirrored gate. The mirrored acrylic gate was an attention grabber.Overall the show was a lot of hard work and money although we did get some contribution of materials and plants but everybody wants to do it again next year and positive feedback certainly works wonders for the esteem of your workforce.

"Thanks for taking the trouble to reply Ian - much appreciated. Unfortunately the manuals don't help in that my machine doesn't have a reservoir or dipstick so I'm scratching my head!!! "

"Yet more good advice, charging an hourly rate is an illness which seems to be prevalent in "our" trade all it does is to devalue our skills, experience and investment in our businesses along with pandering to customers expectations for a low cost…"

"Try and price per visit instead of hourly rate. 2-3 hour slots say to custumer £90-£100 per visit.
This will be half your day if you add travel to and from the job. Or have a minimum fee of x amount per visit. If a customer wants an hour or 2 it…"

"As relative novices to gardening - 4th year of trading - we have experienced what you are going through and feel your anxiety and frustration and "is-it-all-worth-it-I-might-as-well-go-and-work-at-Tesco" thoughts .
At the end of the day it boils…"

"Mix the job up I do some contracts that work out at £75hr.
Some just grass £500 per day
Some private £25hr
Some priced jobs £500 per day
Don't just stick to hourly rate you'll make nothing.  To make bigger money you have to invest in better machines…"

Yes business costs just absorb turnover especially in the early days and I know from experience what a spreadsheet tells us we need to charge is not always reflected by what a customer is prepared to pay and we can end up living hand to mouth…"

"The other issue is, the Type 1 is not free draining, it packs down into a hard pan, unlike chippings and gravel.
Round river gravel rolls around when driven on, chippings, crushed rock has angular edges and doesn't roll around but are free draining."
