HOW TO CHARGE STIHL BATTERIES IN THE VAN

Hi guys

Looking to gradually include battery operated tools to our vans but when I had a test with Stihl products, the battery charges come with a three pin plug.  How do you charge the batteries during the work day while in the van?

Also, it appears the blowers run time is just 22 minutes, is ther another company whose blowers last longer than that?

Get an inverter fitted that will charge while the ignition is on and engine is running these come in 240v and various wattage with 3 pin connections.

We have 2 vans fitted with pure sine wave inverters (one is 1000w continuous power, the other 1500w continious)....check the maths on the size of cables you require and fuse it correctly as otherwise you might have a vehicle fire....

In reality we hardly use them as we only have battery strimmers and hedgetrimmers and charge them at night instead.

  • easiest solution is to buy lots of batteries as charging in vans is hardly ideal even with the fastest of chargers unless spending a fair bit of time driving around between jobs, As for blowers, all brands are relatively power hungry compared to the hedge trimmers etc, rather than the stihl being in any way less efficient than any other make

We have several batteries but plug in at customers when possible.

Which reminds me, I need to put one on charge now :-)

Although i try to mostly use cordless , I am finding its not quite the ultimate solution .

Six hours of hedge cutting yesterday involved having to resort to using stihl petrol hedge trimmer and stih petrol blower , plenty of battery power on the hedge trimmer but after four hours continous use the blades started to gum up with sap and affected its performance and emit shrill high pitched screeching sound .

My cordless blower runs for 30 minutes and great for small tidy ups but not on a long stretch . so still really having to resort to petrol to bail me out .

That's why we always carry wd40 in every van and lubricate the blades regularly throughout the day. We also regularly grease the gearboxes when back at the yard.

        • crikey was it conifers, i tend to use one of my HSA94's for them as to my mind the blades of the HSA86 seem to drag a bit on those

Privet which has encrusted the blade with a brown sap .

Tried lubricatant with no affect .

so have loosened the blade nuts and lightly greased which seems to work but going to try and remove sap using white spirit before resorting to buying a can of sap removing solvent .

            • I use Stop Resin made by Kramp which is a caustic foam that loosens the resin nicely so it can be wiped off, sometimes needs to be agitated with a brush to get the best effect
