If I did more rough work would probably use square, or star etc
Also got some Stihl round 2.4 sat on the shelf getting dusty:)
Never give it any thought when I buy square or round.
nylium starline for me on the rare occasions i use the petrol strimmers
I generally use stihl 3m round line but picked up some 2.7 round for cheap at the Arb Show and it's alright, very little difference really slightly better finish but you get more meterage per roll so I'll probably buy a roll of that when i need some more.
I didn't really put much thought into it when I bought the spool I have, but now I'm looking there does seem to be a lot of choice really.
So I get that thinner line will give a better finish, but is it a big difference? The stuff I use is round 2.7mm and it seems ok really.
What about the different shaped lines, square, star etc?
I guess the thinner line is easier to spin and higher rpm to give a cleaner finish.
I find the thicker stuff lasts better when strimming up to walls.
Wear rate of the line is greatly affected by how dry it is. If the nylon dries out the line becomes increasingly brittle and thus older line doesnt last as long as new line.
Not sure about old line as I use about 1KM a year so it never gets very old (apart from that 2.4 line sat going dusty but that's rubbish when it's new)
It also depends how powerful the machine is. A big machine with thin line won't work and vice versa
