  • They'll do ok in shade, try to stick to the green(er) varieties though (more chlorophyll); so tenax is your best bet.

    Will they be ok in beepest darkest shade ? I think total reasonable sunlight may be as little as an hour.

  • Worked in a number of gardens in New Zealand with an impenetrable overhead canopy (so virtually no sunlight) and phormium tenax grew below without a problem. I guess in those conditions you'd have to be wary of other varieties...

    Hi nick just had a quick thought, tenax would prbaly get to big for the site, any smaller varieties you can think of. Once again thanks very much.

    In my experience Phormiums are indeed much better suited to a sunny position or semi shade at best. Existing planting I've had to work with which has been installed by previous persons has not done well at all in shade.
