    We obtained the following two books for our Apprentice - they are still in use (even by me) as we keep them in the Yard;

    1 The Lawn Guide

    2 The Lawn e-Book

    Both good, cheap and useful for someone starting out and needing a refefnece guide. The lawn e-book can also be placed on your laptop/iPad for use at site ;-)

  • a good starter book is The Lawn Expert by Dr DG Hessayon, this was recommended at college for greenkeepers starting level 2 sports turf, its basic but its a good start and its really cheap to buy

  • Agree with John, The Lawn Expert by Dr DG Hessayon. Good basic info!
  • 3rd vote for The Lawn Expert book, it started off my knowledge of lawns.

  • Hi,

    my new book will be out later this year and will be the most up to date and informative book out there. Written by a Lawn Expert! It will detail so much more than these others. Other books are just about enough for some people, but if you want more, then this book will have it.

  • Well, could we good folk of LJN have an early get at the book on special offer? I for one would love any new tome of information regarding lawn care - always usefull to have as much info as is humanly possible on the matter.!

  • I am sure we could do something! It will cover lawn care from the basic level to the croquet lawn etc.
    Something for everyone. And its certainly not advocating what the garden celebrities presume everyone does, who has been involved in golf course, of throwing untold substances at your lawn.

    Thanks

  • indeed what everyone presumes is totally different to what is usually needed - I am surprised how many people do not lime their lawns - some I have limed in the past month have responded amazingly, as if I've just dumped Striaght urea on them - showing how much nutrient was locked up the acid soil... but I never see it mentioned anywhere apart from literature aimed at farmers - but the principles remain the same.

  • lawn care education is terribly portrayed as its done by the likes of Monty Don etc who have no interest in lawns. So therefore what is shown is appalling.
    Liming to be fair is fine if you know what you are doing, but many in domestic lawn care do not, so tricky to advise.

    I agree though.....

  • I suppose liming would not be relevant to alot of people - that said I care for about a dozen lawns on very acid soils over gritstone - usually PH6.1-6.5 but one lawn, and entire garden is often giving PH5.8 - 6 on every test - so most of the P&K are locked up and alot of the N is theirfore useless too - when lime is needed, it is sorely needed, the rest of the time, its a by-the by for me.
