Hi everyone, I'm looking for some support on advertising my hard landscaping business online. At the Moment I'm in two local newspapers and getting maybe 1 lead per week! and that's costing me £280 per month.

Im getting calls from yell.com and have arranged a meeting with an account manager, heard lots of bad feedback from online sources but I wanted to see this account manager and see what he has to offer. I have a Facebook page that is growing and a website that is currently being built so I could advertise on google PPC or facebook adds. Another local fencing company suggested checkatrade, has anyone had any good results from them?

Basically Im open to suggestion and any help would be greatly appreciated before I go ahead and remove my newspaper adds.

Regards, Michael Walsh

I don't advertise other than my not finished website so not much help. But I would be very careful with yell.
Very pushy in my experience and after 10 calls in the last week I've put thier number on a block on my phone so it does not even get to answer phone.
My brother in law has stopped his yell advert as he was paying £12000 a year! He was using it for about 5 years and trade has got busier even since stopping but he did not think he got much trade from it. That's a builders yard by the way.
    • Thanks Richard, the amount of bad feedback ive read on these forums and others about yell has definitely put me off! I think google PPC might be a good option though, also looking into leafleting!

Of course you have to make your own choices, but Yell.com....really ever spoken to anyone who has actually used it to find a biz

Website, social media, signed van, uniforms, all that would prob cost less than the £3360 you currently spend on Newspapers

Then need to spend time or money promoting yourself, a good option, would be join LJN premium and get access to biz stuff in the B.O.G. business objectives group, where you can talk numbers at length

I use Google Adwords to promote my business, Michael, I have used Google Adwords on several different websites in the past and have been successful with this type of advertising. It does enable you to reach people in an area of your choice. I can put you in touch with someone that I use who has been extremely helpful and obliging and helped me create successful campaigns.
I hope this helps and all the best to you.I use Google Adwords to promote my business, Michael, I have used Google Adwords on several different websites in the past and have been successful with this type of advertising. • I have run my own Adwords campaigns with some success. Currently using yell to do a PPC campaign for 6 months. Lots of small jobs come through with the odd larger job.

They will promise you far more than you will actually get so bear that in mind. I do get maybe 2/3 calls a week for £120 a month

Might be worth becoming BWC member, checka trade is fairly expensive IIRC.

personally learn Adwords and run your own campaign. Cheapest and most effective.
  • I had a Yell rep visit about 2 months ago. They said they would create a website for us and do all the other things to place your listing at the top end of google i.e. manage the site. Cost came down to about £350 for web design and £50/month for all the management stuff. We had just spent a fortune creating a website so will pursue doing it all ourselves for the moment. But the Yell deal offered sounded good and advertising with them in the past had been successful. The difficulty i find is that the more you try to do yourself the more you find you need other peoples help, and costs can mount up dealing with those lose ends. I created a business Facebook page for instance, but have now been told to always create a personal one first so you can join groups that you can link your business to. Trying to create the personal one now seems impossible.

I am not that bad at tech stuff but i would love to find some one who would spend 1/2 a day in front of my computer putting lose ends together, make suggestions and answer my questions. I look forward to the day when we are so huge we have an IT department, but i won't live to see that happen

  • It may not be of any help but I am happy to give you a free space on my website although it may not be quite what you'd be looking for. I would set up a category for landscaping services and you can post a free ad if that helps.

    Chris
