After ten years in this glorious industry, it is easy to lose sight the wonderful and honoured position we are in especially when you’re pushing paper, making calls, and solving the day-to-day problems, which inevitably are part of running a business. It’s hard being self-employed, there is too much work, not enough work and, on the whole the weather is rubbish, and like all jobs, it has it ups and its downs.Today was a lovely day, a slight chill in the air and the smell of autumn in the breeze. My hound and I took to the hill (the only hill in Cambridge) and walked. We walked for miles and I made myself look up instead of my usual trudge staring at the ground. The sun warmed my face and sparkled on the The Gog Down highlighting the new growth in the fields beyond, a promise for next years harvest. The last of this year’s sheep were unusually quiet, grazing on the rich grass which, over the passing months, has been a deserted plane of buttercups, daisies and cow parsley as the months have progressed.I drank in the trees wearing their early autumn wardrobe and felt impatient for the full glory of their spectacular display to come.Berries, hanging in the hedgerows shone rich inky black and juicy blood red ripe, ready for the wildlife to gorge upon to help sustain them during the impending winter. Wide and long strips of parchment coloured grasses, spent from this season’s growth, bordered the corps of tree creating a wonderful contrast of layers, colours and textures.Covered in confetti of falling leaves, my hound and I headed for the car, warm, content and at one with the world. This morning made me realise how people who engage me to design their garden value the passing of the seasons and the beauty that they create. They look to me to re-create a representation of the wider landscape, all within the boundary of a fence. This is not just a job it’s a privilege.Kerrie John - The garden design Co

  • Clever,
I wish I had your English-Maybe one day.

yes, a lovely day for a change- the weather I am getting used to it.
when we just moved to england last June it was raining everyday and after few weeks my daughter asked me (than)If it's the flood like in the bible (there isa word for that in Hebrew-the Israelis language) -I said no Just few days of rain -but than news on T.V. showed flooded houses.

Back in Israel had 9-10 month no rain _ I loved it- most people will say too hot.
but here you have all this beauty of this season.
    All the best,Kerrie

"The boundary line runs down the centre of these steps so esstentially it will run from the gap between the window/patio door right down the steps to where the bin is on picture 2"

"How are you going to put a hedge down the centre of concrete steps?"

Tim Bucknall replied to Ben Huntington's discussion Advice: Fencing down Concrete Steps
"A better picture would help, so we can see what's at the foot of the steps, and what happens to the boundary line at the top.  To get posts in any depth you'd need a big hole which would make it very hard to do neatly.  I would probably be thinking…"

"I have a neighbour with a similar situation - a fence was installed to the boundary (6' posts bolted to the concrete), while it doesnt fall over it waves in the wind precariously, basically not enough support from the brackets.
Personally I'd be…"

Ian Harvey replied to PAUL's discussion Small, compact battery strimmer with variable speed trigger?
"Have a look at the Ego St1400. Cracking piece of kit with 2 power levels and variable trigger which is easy to hold at extra low speed. Well balanced with either 2.5Ah or 4.0Ah batteries. Can take 1.6mm up to 2.5mm "string"
The only thing it doesn't…"

"Stihl introduced the AK system some years after the AP system, which to be fair wasn't really selling in the numbers they might have hoped at the time, the idea presumably to kick start sales with a less expensive battery range, can't blame them for…"

PAUL replied to PAUL's discussion Small, compact battery strimmer with variable speed trigger?
"Yes, it runs on the AK battery system. It does also have a variable trigger but it is very sensitive and quite tricky to hold at a very low speed. "

Lawn Water Conserver

A question for those offering lawn treatments. Does anyone use a specific product, separate to their normal treatments, that's specifically used when we have long, dry periods? Can anyone recommend a good product? I imagine it would likely be a…
