Using a blog for your business

JUST a quick heads-up about a piece on the Daily Telegraph website that talks about using a blog and the internet to help your business - regardless of its size. Blog on and use web pages to drive up sales opportunities Obviously as a member of the network you have a blog ready and waiting for you to write to, but as the piece mentions it does require you to update more than once a month. One of the ways you could use a blog is to keep track of the lessons, products and techniques you've used on a project, you don't need to provide details of where or who you've worked for, but the blog could be a very useful 'brain dump'. This will let you keep track of things you've done each week and through the search facility easily find individual entries. Any questions, just leave a comment below. • I've found a blog to be very useful in promoting my business, GrowVeg.com (The blog is at www.growveg.com/growblog.aspx). It's a lot of work but crucially it keeps your website up there in Google's rankings for relevant keywords for your business. Google always gives preference to new changing content, so regularly updated blogs are ranked well (as Philip will no doubt tell you).
There's a useful book I read about it called 'Blogging for Business' by Holtz and Demopoulos. It's not earth-shattering in content but if you are going to put the time in required for weekly updates then it is worth reading.

    Hi Jeremy
You are right that people have to spend a little time each week to write a short article or two, but as you highlight you can gain some real benefits.

Shel Holtz is one of the people I often read, or listen to, as he does a podcast with Neville Hobson.

Another writer I'd recommend is Steve Rubel, who has a PR background but also a wide knowledge and understanding of how businesses can use blogs and networks like Landscape Juice.

If people want tips on taking their blog posts on a step or seven then ProBlogger is well worth following.

And use the subscription options all these sites offer to keep in touch with what their owners write, this is so much better than putting them in your favourites as it's the regular little tips and ideas you absorb which will help your business.

"I have a 6ft pair of Niwakis, wish i’d had them years before I did. I initially got the 8fts and immediately realised they would be a pain for the majority of hedges I used to cut. I think they are brilliant just make sure they are seated properly.…"

"I wouldn't cut a hedge without one. Anything over 6' you should get with 3 adjustable legs, otherwise they can be unstable if you lean - but positioned correctly they are the only way.

"Yes had that scenario where you can't reach a fiddly bit no matter what ladder and have to balance on the apex of a shed roof or do best job painstakingly with a long reach pole pruner . "

"I'm very wary of these tripod ladders, I took a life changing fall from the top of a 12ft tripod. Now I only use them myself with great care. The issue is that they are very unstable at the top if you lean to either side, and they go with no…"

"the tripods are good but in some scenarios the wide base and the fact the 3rd leg has to be placed some distance away from the step part for stability makes this large foot print impractical eg when cutting hedge behind a shed or greenhouse with…"

"Tripods are better than any other ladder that's a fact. You can cut hedges that are lower than the ladder but it is more awkward, I have a 6ft amd a 12 foot been using both for the last 15yrs and haven't come stuck yet. Believe me once you've had…"
