Yellowing of lawn

One of my customer's lawn is starting to go yellow in certain areas (see pic).  It has been fertilised and had weed control and otherwise looks quite healthy apart from the yellowing.

I suggested they put on their sprinkler to get some more moisture into the lawn which they have done over the last week or so with little change.

Any suggestions?

  • This lawn is suffering from compaction and nutrients are failing to get to the roots.

It needs aerating, scarifying and fertilising.

    • Hi Adrian, thanks for that.  It was scarified in the autumn and has had a fertiliser treatment but it hasn't been aerated.  Is compaction the primary issue here?

      • This yellowing is a typical symptom of of the grass suffering over the winter, and aeration and fertilisation should improve it dramatically.

Looks patchy which might be a particular species affected by drought. Test the drainage by pouring a bucket of water over a small area - look for beading on the surface or slow drainage as a sign of compaction - the soil gets hydrophobic as part of this and repels water -  you'll need to aerate with hollow tines and top dress - you might need some wetting agent to help the moisture percolate properly and reduce the surface tension.

Hmm, to me there are sufficient areas that appear to have a slightly pink tinge to look carefully at red thread. More close-up pics would be useful. If RT, possible fungicide, more feed and aeration good.

  • Its red thead which is a supperficial disease. Lack of nitrogen is the cause plus compaction.
