Yell earnings review

I know quite a few people either use Yellow Pages and Yell.com, or at least get constant calls from their sales reps! So I though you might be interested in a write up of its recent earnings review: Earnings: Yell.com Grows Online, But Over Tenth Of Revenue Will Disappear Business directory group Yell is still not making enough from the web to offset falling ad sales in its printed Yellow Pages, but its 2008 earnings were worsened by currency fluctuations and debt charges, and the next few months look tough in the daunting classifieds market.

  • Have to say, had a VERY pushy salesman trying to persuade me to put an ad in the Yellow Pages! I did it for a year and got no contacts from it whatsoever... I must say that the paper yellow pages is a dinosaur these days - I bin mine as soon as it appears on my doorstep! I find personal recommendation and networking is the best way of getting the right person for the job. My parish magazine has given me my very best contacts!

    Hi Sarah,

Think you are right to look at local opportunities and to make it very easy for people to recommend you.

When you say 'networking' are you heading along to local business get-togethers and breakfast meetings etc?

Always thought that it could prove useful, especially for getting work from business owners themselves at their home.

  • Hmm,always fancied a business breakfast meeting - my breakfasts usually comprise of peanut butter sandwiches, forgotten homework and late teenagers! Tee hee.. I find being an active member of one's local community really helps - getting involved in school projects where possible, having a display board up at one's local fete/horticultural show, getting out and generally meeting the public who all are potential clients. Also, once work has started in a particular road, putting a flier through the letterboxes of other houses in that road can also kick start stuff!

It's clear you don't need the boys in Yellow ;-)

I suppose it comes down to turning up regularly whether that's at local events, in the parish magazine or just a flyer through people's letter boxes.
  • Doesn't it depend upon the services you offer? I would assume that if I undertook hard landscaping Yell would be a good place to spend my advertising pounds.

I was contacted a little while ago regarding Yell.com and he was happy to offer a one town listing for £80 - last year they were talking silly money for the same listing. Still said no.

I just wonder if enough people think "yell.com" when beginning an online search to make it viable, especially when you have got Google sat there in the corner.

Because one thing you rarely see are Yell pages in search engine results.

If Rupert Murdoch was previously in any doubt about the anticipated decline in newspaper advertising revenues he won't be now after his News Corp. posted quarterly losses of $6.4billion (30% drop in revenues).

Earnings: News Corp posts $6.4bn quarterly loss
