About the Landscape Juice Network

Founded in 2008. The Landscape Juice Network (LJN) is the largest and fastest growing professional landscaping and horticultural association in the United Kingdom.

LJN's professional business forum is unrivalled and open to anyone within within the UK landscape industry

LJN's Business Objectives Group (BOG) is for any Pro serious about building their business.

For the researching visitor there's a wealth of landscaping ideas, garden design ideas, lawn advice tips and advice about garden maintenance.

I have been informed of late that the practice of cold calling/ canvassing  is on the increase to gain new clients apposed to adverts flyers etc.

I understand some of you will be against the idea, its morals virtues & so forth however

Its happening, my competition within lawn care are doing this on quite a large scale, I did not understand why I saw other company staff/ owners booted and suited in signed up vans

on a regular bases till a client of mine told me he had had company's cold call on more than one occasion.

I don't know if I would have the balls to cold call, however why should I stand back and see my competition gain larger market penetration.

Times are changing and you have to move with it in my opinion, leaflet drops are pretty much a waste of time these days unless you have something to follow it up with, if you decide to go that route then drop leaflets first then give a knock following day, only knock at houses once, if you get told they are not interested then don't persist, move on and DO NOT knock there again... I personally don't cold call, but it's the norm here... Good luck

Police have been pushing the no cold calling a lot over the pass few years around here. Most doors have stickers saying to leave if you're a cold caller. Areas mostly populated by the retired have blanked bans on it. Personally I'd never do it anyway because if they wanted your services from the leaflet then they'd call going around to knock afterwards in my opinion is pushing yourself onto the client too much.

Might be wrong, but I think Neighbourhood Watch areas are by default 'No Cold Callers' - they are in my area ?

Seth's right, in that TS & Police are pushing for no cold calling (especially see point 3) :

      http://new.surreycc.gov.uk/business-and-consumers/stop-cold-callers...

I think you need a thick skin to attempt this method and also suspect it could back-fire on those Franchises once the momentum gains ?

Can you use it to benefit you ? with a Tag line like : - We're the Lawn Care Specialists who want disturb you by Cold Calling in the middle of your Dinner...but we will turn up when agreed and give the best lawn you can afford etc blah etc blah?

Neighbourhood watch are no cold call areas here as well. I'm not actually in a no cold caller zone although we do have a blue sticker saying not to knock (on a white door so can't miss it) Doesn't stop them knocking on the door though which is a shame.

  • Hi Bespoke Lawncare,

Really interesting to see the general consensus on canvassing in the forum. A similar thread came up in another forum and those guys were more than happy to canvass - suggesting it was vital to do so!

It was a different trade so perhaps it varies trade to trade! Personally, I think as long as you're polite and you don't hassle people it shouldn't be too much of a problem!

greenthumb have been cold calling in my area (Staffordshire) for over 3 years, and they advertise often too for cold calling vacancies, couple of years ago I used to see the local lawn operative regular on my rounds always coverd in fert dust lol,  the next time I saw him he was suited and booted doing the calling role.

  • im currently leafleting and i wouldnt dare cold call im from a tele sales back ground to of 4 years in the IT sector which is one of the toughest.

I think cold calling for our work seems very pikeyish, how would you feel if someone did it to you?. I think they will loose alot of custom to doing this also.

    Are times really that tough?
I think it's a big no no but that's just me, leaflets fine but if they want you they will call, if not move on. I found it hard at the start but I never did that.
Old people especially should be left alone imo some of my customers would be frightened by it tbh
