When should a sole trader become a limited company?

One of the most common questions asked by the self-employed is whether to trade as a company or as an individual. The decision has implications for tax, legal and financial responsibilities, the amount of paperwork you will need to complete and how your peers view you. There is no straightforward answer, because different legal structures suit different situations.

The 'landscape' has also changed making it even harder to determine by the loss of the value of 'Goodwill' and the change in Corp Tax over recent budgets .

  • I recently incorporated my company to save the name. But I am going to leave it dormant for this season with a view to trading as LTD next year. It's not really for financial reason, just to properly separate the business from myself as an entity on it's own, and also I think a LTD looks better, especially to commercial clients.

I still need to research everything about trading as LTD really, so I thought I would take the time this year.
