I always liken it to supermarket fuel against say Esso/BP etc!! You're led to believe the more expensive branded fuels may have something extra in it which makes things work better however that appears not to be the case with fuel..... Is it the same with weedkillers?..... I suspect yes, having tried Roundup and a cheap brand however I'm sure others will have found otherwise!!.
There's no doubt that there are differences between the additives included with supermarket fuels and the more "premium" brands like Shell or Esso. We had a presentation by a fuel expert at a car club night (less exciting than it sounds in reality, lol!). All the fuel comes from the nearest refinery, no matter what brand you use, but they all have different "recipes" of additives. The same as all prawn sandwiches come from a factory in Worksop, but the Asda and M&S ones use different qualities of ingredients, and different amounts of the more expensive things.
I've had diesel waxing problems in the past and the garage knew instantly where I'd filled up, as that very cold winter they had a run of problems with Tesco fuel. I've also been advised for the last 6 years by my local garage to avoid supermarket fuel other than odd fills, and before the MOT to run a couple of tanks of premium diesel as the cleaning additives really do have an effect.
Are all Glyphosate products made the same? Appears not............
...and this does not take into account the recent launch of the newer Roundup ProVantage....
Interesting quote in that post from someone : "I've used the cheaper glyphosate..... easily half the roundup price............... didn't work as quickly and needed a higher concentration so didn't actually save any money."
Where as some other brands need COSHH assessments, aren't approved for aquatic use. No adjuvants.
I have used rosate36 before and I prefer roundup probio as it seems to be better when the weather is changeable. Also my commercial clients request that only clean label weed killers are used. If not they want me to jump through far to many hoops!
I think there two main reasons; one is the improved newer products provide a safe solution, the other is that different producers have different cost/distribution bases, hence may be cheaper/dearer (no different to comparing two gardeners - both 'do' the same, but may produce a different finish and/or charge different rates).
the other thing to consder is also are you mixing correctly?
After this springs pesticides road show I was made aware about the water ph being an issue-- checked and I needed to acidify my water as it was quite alkaline which was reducing the effectiveness.
Since using those addatives - Clinic ace mixed to 14.4/g/l for spot spraying has gone from killing most plants in 10-14 days down to 5-7 - which is what I have from using roundup probio in the past.......
Craig, at the last count there was 439 registrations for glyphosate within the U.K & obviously there will be some difference in price of these.
You are quite right about what you say that some vary in strength, or have additives such as anti-drift, water conditioners & surfactant systems. The pack size also has a big part to play on price, the more you buy, the cheaper it is.
Each company will tend to have a 360g glyphosate which they sell & price accordingly. I would suggest speaking to whoever you buy your products from as they may have cheaper brands available or be willing to offer trade discounts.
We have our LJN Trade Silver prices which you can gain access to for free, & we also have cheaper brands of glyphosates & other weed killers we don't openly promote, but will happily quote you for.
Hope this helps,
Ollie
Good shout.
