looks like it needs sanding inbetween the blocks to me it looks odd it may be the picture though!

either spot spray or just pull them out dont know how big drive is though

    • Picture still isn't the greatest, I've hand picked them out and I think this is either second or third time I've done it. Tried spot spraying them before also and they have grown back. In between the blocks there's no sand.

  • They look like the blocks which shouldn't be sanded. They are permeable joints I believe. So they are filled with a small chipping, or should be.

Just standard spot spraying or pull them out will do the job!

    • Yup, permeable paving allows the surface water to drain into the ground rather than run off into the drains.  We keep all of our block paving clean with a monthly spot weed with Roundup. On one particular site it means 6 solid hours of walkabouts.

  • Spot spraying or hand weeding would be best. The only residual chemical that can be legally blanket sprayed in this situation is Nomix which is an option I've been looking at for some time but just can't bring myself to pay the initial outlay.

3314753035?profile=RESIZE_1024x1024Many modern car parks now use the SUDs compliant paving and use 3mm joint aggregate to allow water penetration to lower course.

The grit is not used to lock the blocks unlike normal paverrs & sand. They are can be a royal pain to maintain as weeds can take more of a hold.

Spot spraying is the most cost effective approach, blanket spraying if applicable uses up considerable more product.

The maintenance plan for these areas is quite time consuming as they need regular sweeping to keep the channels free of debris that blocks water and provides an ideal weed bed.

We have a prescribed managament plan for this type of surface (see below) that includes keeping the grit topped up which helps reduce weeds. We've just swept (using a Madvac) & re-gritted one business park using 3T of the stuff.

"Weed growth – when sedimentation occurs in areas of permeable paving then there is the potential for weed growth, this will typically occur where there are overhanging trees or soft landscaping slopes down on to the paving or in areas which do not receive over run from vehicles particularly frequently. Weeds can be removed from the surface through the controlled application of proprietary non-persistent contact herbicides. Those containing Glyphosate are the most suitable.

Glyphosate based herbicides are the most common for general-purpose use, they are most effective on grasses and perennial weeds with non-woody stems. Weeds should be sprayed when they are actively growing, in dry but not sunny conditions, so that the Glyphosate will go down to the root and kill the weed completely. Glyphosate will be neutralized upon contact with the ground, which makes it safe to plant in the area soon after treatment. It is available ready mixed or as a concentrate."

I think even the Nomix Dual will struggle as there is no substrate for it to 'cling' on to. Spot spray on a regular basis I am afraid - you have grass right next to it, so you will always get grass seeds blowing into the paving  - especially after a cut. Could try a weedball to avoid overspray??

Weeds will be worse if the inter-block gaps are empty as they have more opportunity to establish.

Ironically, if the paving is fully maintained with Agg Grit or totally NOT maintained (ie the gaps are allowed to fill up with debris) you get less weeds !

  • Hi ya, no amount of sand in the gaps will stop the weeds. You just won't get it deep enough to stop their roots getting to the soil. Also debris that will feed them will always build up and allow them to grow.

Weed killer, doesn't work either, plus you end up with the unsightly die off that does seem to want to disappear. Or it turns to dust so you can  rebreathe the lovely chemicals as you work.

What I have found to be very effective is strong salt solution watered in and hand weeding.

It's always a surprise how customers want me to put toxins in their environment. Yet when they see the results their protestations are quelled

    Good luck :)

    • I can see you're not a weedkiller fan however I reckon if I told a customer I was going to handweed their blockpaved driveway and how long it was going to take, they'd have a fit and I'd be out of a job:)    Roundup really is a cheap, quick and effective solution and there really aren't any significant chemicals to rebreath as you work!
