It all boils down to what kind of vehicle you actually need.
Personally I think contract hire could be an expensive way to do things, as I know of people that have been 'hammered' on slight damages to vehicles - it happens to all of us - if its your own, you tend to shrug it off or ignore it - when its hired, it has to be done and you have to pay for it.
Do you need a little van, big van, truck - do you need to tow etc, etc.
Also, whereabouts in the country are you?
Avoid contract hire, could be a world of pain in the pocket when you return it !
A cheap transit would cope with most jobs, depends what work you want to do.
If cash is short maybe team up with other local gardeners and offer your help and start saving like mad. Best of luck :)
Why don't you contact someone like Blue Orchid and talk to them about officially going self-employed as a sole trader, complete a business plan and apply for their business start up loan.
One of the best things I've ever done as it paid for my van, 3 chainsaws and a new chipper with money left over.
credit unions are a good thing. If you are a non member it may take time to build up saving to get a loan but maybe in future.
