Van_White-460x320White van man? What white van man?!

AXA Business Insurance has discovered, through careful research and analysis, that the white van man stereotype exists in the past.

They found that van drivers are actively helpful people with a strong sense of civic duty. They even deemed us van driver types as ‘selfless, responsible and with a strong moral code.’ Aw, shucks! We’ve been waiting years for someone to say it out loud.

The proof: 90% of van drivers would stop to help a stranger in need. 78% said they would pull over to help an injured person. 72% would stop to help out in an accident. This is all despite the pressure to power on with the day and get as much work in as possible.

Nearly half of all van drivers would stop to assist a broken down vehicle. Some van drivers would even use their stereotypical assertiveness to diffuse conflict rather than cause it: 28% of drivers would intervene in a road rage incident.

Why all the altruism? AXA Business Insurance theorised that van drivers usually drive for a living, and so are more professional and assured. They don’t break laws and are road-confident, meaning they have a sense of leadership on the roads. And what a benevolent leadership it is!

Darrell Sansom, managing director at AXA Business Insurance said: “In my view, we need to reclaim the label and take back the term. White van man is the nation’s secret superhero. Let’s celebrate him and her as such.”

So, recogniton at last ?

  • Don't break laws might be in a grey area with speed... sometimes seatbelts.

Certainly this blue van driver would try to help out wherever possible.

We do also let other vans out into traffic, much more than car drivers let other cars out...

  • Yeah, car drivers need to be educated. Vans have no windows in the back or far sides. So cannot see if backing out of a drive. Give us a chance, stop and let us back out safely.
