Unwanted cold calls - latest twist

I've been in the office this morning sorting out invoicing and finishing some quotes and was surprised at the number of unwanted cold "sales" calls I recieved today .

Not that unusual except I've noticed a trick they are now using.

Rather than recieve calls with International Number - NA, Number Witheld or an 08 numbers showing, these companies are now buying single, free standing, unterminated number in every Exchange area and then matching your home number to one of their 'local' numbers and then placing the call routed through that number.

The inference being that you if you receieve a  call prefixed by your local area code - you are more likely to answer it.

Nice Try !!!!!

You can often spot these numbers due to digit sequences. After a while you just know :)

Telephone cold calling was in the news last week.

    BBC: http://m.bbc.com/news/uk-31616523

Currently, firms can only be punished if the Information Commissioner can prove a call caused "substantial damage or substantial distress".

But from 6 April, that legal requirement is to be removed.

More than 175,000 complaints were made to the Information Commissioner's Office (ICO) last year about nuisance calls and text messages.

    'Spammers' licence'

The government says the number of complaints has risen in the past decade and the issue is particularly acute for the elderly and housebound as such calls can cause distress and anxiety.

In a speech earlier this month, Information Commissioner Christopher Graham described the current law as "a licence for spammers and scammers" and appealed for more powers.

  • You can normally hear the back ground 'call centre' noise before the caller even speaks.....my que to hang up!
  • the firms can use modern technology to show what number they want , if its unavailable or 0800 number I let the answer phone take it. but tonight I got a call from one of the political parties I don't think they will call again
