After 20 years of using treated timber in various applications, I am beginning to notice that I am replacing machine rounded posts whilst the admittedly rougher looking peeled and treated post are more often still sound. Anybody want to support or rubbish my hypothesis that a peeled post has greater integrity than a post that has been rounded in a machine and will therefore last longer?

  • ive seen both - i think? some machined in the pile ive seen are proper rough ! interesting post.

  • I too have found that machine rounds have a relatively short life span. I think the producers have realised that the products were not treated well enough in the earlier years and are now offering different grades, up to 15 year guarantee against rot. However, this is all irrelevant if the rounds are cut to size on site and not re- pressure treated before installation.

Ho hum...what we found at a site last week we maintain and had to fence off while responsible parties contacted:

We believe the recent heavy rain has finally caused this machined wood 10/12" log retaining wall to fail.

It has been under watch for some time since we noticed a 'lean' and rotting wood at lower ground level

Surveyor specificed, with supposed treatment to UC4. Building developer (major) installed.

The Bun fight is on as to who is blame, repair and review the remaining 100m + of similar construction around the site (which is also now fenced off for safety)

Will be interested to see outcome....

    • Up until recently UC4 hasn't been available in my local area (Colchester). Now I have only seen 4x4 posts to UC4 spec.

I highly doubt the developer used UC4. Only as I see so many cutting corners!
